Insurance

It might also be a good idea to check your overall insurance cover before taking part in the march.

Damage/disease and security

Do not start the march if you are not in a condition to complete the 100 Km long march.
Knee injuries and back problems will most likely make themselves reminded on the mountain.
The only help you can get on the mountain is from your friends.
In the wilderness the mobile phone doesn’t work and there are no roads.
Helicopter evacuation is possible in the event of injury or illness, but only after that we have been able to contact SOS. This can take up to 24h.

We will of course have a first aid kit with us.

Terminating the hike
Since there are no roads in the Kebnekaise area, it is not possible to terminate the march without walking back to Nikkaluokta.

Preparation
You need to come well prepared for a march like this. You will cover 100 kilometres of sometimes tough mountainous terrain with a pack on your back. This will not be a problem for most people with a normal health and fitness level, but the better shape you are in, the more enjoyable the experience will be. We recommend that you have at least 200 hiking kilometres under your belt from the spring/summer period before the start, preferably carrying some kind of pack. This is mainly to accustom your back, shoulders, legs and -above all - your feet, to long hikes over uneven ground.

You should also spend some time properly breaking in your boots. If you are thinking of buying new boots, we recommend that you use them for at least 14 days before the march. Wear them to work or when shopping. Don’t start the march if you are experiencing back or knee pain.
A double pair of socks should be worn.

Feet
Ensure that your feet are in good shape before the march. Remove calluses, snip toenails and grease them with feet lotion.
The absolute most common cause of problems is the feet. In nine cases out of ten the reason is that one has not ta. A half day is all peace and delight, after one day, it begins to become bothersome. Day two you don’t walk at all.

Clothing and other equipment

The march is located almost 200 km above the polar circle in an area that on certain parts is extremely weather illuminated. This means that it can be difficult to find natural shelter from wind, rain and snow.
Hot days with temperatures over 20 degrees above zero can be mixed with windy and chill days with rain that includes snow. That means that the cold can to become a persistent antagonist.
Please note that It is the participant's own responsibility to bring sufficient equipment in order to make it on his own for several days in mountain territory during the particular weather conditions that can occur at this time of the year. This sets additional requirements on the clothing. Ensure to include waterproof clothing both a jacket and a pair of trousers.
All overnighting and cooking will take place outdoors.

Packing
For two people sharing a tent and cooking equipment, a 60-litre backpack will suffice for a 6-day hike.

You should bring the following items in your backpack:

A sleeping bag that can handle temperatures down to minus five degrees.
Ground cover (with extra patches if it’s inflatable)
A tent *
A stove (Field kitchen)**, saucepans and fuel (use gas so you can refill your fuel along the way) Matches or a lighter and a sponge
A bowl, mug and spoon
Small, light water bottle, about 0.5 litres
Toilet case with the necessities (toothbrush, toothpaste and soap friction blister dressing tape and plasters)
Small towel
Compass
Extra undergarment set (you can wear the other set), also used as pyjamas
Three pairs of socks
One or two pairs of underwear
Athletic shoes (for river crossing)
Hat (plain hat without tassels and such that you can wear while sleeping)
Gloves **
Sunglasses
Cap or sun hat
Rain suit; hooded jacket and pants
Warm fleece cardigan, or an extra down or synthetic garment
Snacks, extra sources of energy
Rain protection for your backpack

You will wear an undergarment shirt, thin wind jacket, underwear/underpants, a pair of hiking pants socks and boots, depending, of course, on the weather.

Please feel free to bring some additional equipment in your baggage if you are uncertain. The equipment that you don’t need can always be left In in Nikkaluokta during hike.

* Tent or place in tent
You will sleep in the tent that you or your hiking mates brought with you.

It’s not required that each person bring a tent of his own. State in the announcement whether you need” tent place” or if you have” tent place” for allocating joint spirit.

Be sure to use the tent before the hike so you know you how to raise the tent, that it is watertight and that no parts are missing. A tent for mountain purposes needs to be quite low, maximum 120 cm high, as well as to have a lot of storm lines that will keep the tent in place during poor weather conditions.

** Stove (Field kitchen)
A Stove (Field kitchen) is divided between two persons. One carries the Stove (Field kitchen), pots, matches and fuel during hike. The comrade carries the tent.
State on the registration which type of fuel you need to your kitchen.

***Gloves
It is highly advisable to bring a pair work gloves, or a similar par of gloves, that can protect the hands against cuts when we are climbing on slippery rocks. It can also be a good idea to bring a pair of warm gloves.

Food
In the Registration fee fuel and food for the march is included. The food consists mainly of freeze-dried dishes.
Fuel is methylated spirit. Gas is available in the form of Primus standard gas containers for kitchens with standard screw valve in the store in Nikkaluokta.
You prepare your food in pairs, with two people sharing each kitchen. You will be divided in cooking pairs before the start.
The portions are dimensioned to the requirements of an adult man. The extent to which one feels completely satisfied can of course vary from person to person.
Little sweets and nuts in the pocket and a packet biscuits in the backpack is always popular elements on the hike.
It’s possible to buy extra food at the start; we recommend that you take your own requirements into consideration to ensure the march is as positive an experience as possible.
Food can not be bought after that we have left Nikkaloukta. We will re-supply our water along the march from all the brooks/ streams and water concentrations on the mountain.

Day stages
Finally, this march is not a contest at all. The enjoyment of the wilderness is the biggest experience.
